Council welcomes new funding for cadetship program

News article released on Tuesday 10 February 2009

Greater Shepparton City Council welcomes the announcement of the release of a second round of the Rural Skills Cadetship Program.

The program, which is funded by Regional and Rural Development, aims to encourage young people to return to regional areas to complete work placement in an industry that is closely linked to their field of study.

Council's Business Development Coordinator Leanne Mulcahy said 12 students from Greater Shepparton were successful in securing cadetships through the initial funding round.

"We welcome the announcement of a second round of funding as programs such as these play an important role in helping to address skills shortages in the region," Ms Mulcahy said.

"Students who secure these cadetships are more likely to maintain their links to the regional area which increases the probability that they will return as a qualified graduate.

"It is crucial that regional towns have the ability to attract skilled workers to the region in order to maintain a viable workforce.

"The program also gives young people valuable work experience."

Cadetships are of a minimum duration of six weeks full time or 200 hours part time over a 12 month period.

Participating students receive up to $2,500 and the employer is paid up to $1,250 upon completion of the 12 month employment period.

Both TAFE and university students who are studying full time are eligible for the cadetships.

Applications close on Tuesday 31 March 2009. For more information telephone (03) 5832 9846 or email leanne.mulcahy@shepparton.vic.gov.au.
