The Greater Shepparton City Council has a strong commitment to greenhouse gas abatement. This is demonstrated through its long involvement with the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) program, delivered though the International Council for Local Environment Initiatives (ICLEI). Greater Shepparton joined the Cities for Climate Protection program in 2000.
Greater Shepparton City Council’s greenhouse reduction goals are:
• Corporate: 20 per cent below 1999 levels by 2010
• Community: 20 per cent below 1999 levels by 2010
A Local Action Plan was developed in 2002 to direct the Council and community in actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Our actions to date include:
• Energy audits and energy efficient retrofits of the Councils major buildings and office equipment;
• Walking school bus program;
• Installation of skylights in Aquamoves Aquatic Centre plant room;
• Carbon sequestration – tree planting program;
The next phase for Council is to become a member of CCP Plus.
