Stormwater Management

Stormwater runoff from our urban areas affects the key waterways of the Broken and Goulburn Rivers, and impacts on plants, animals and users downstream.

Litter or sediment entering our waterways are pollutants which reduce water quality, and affect the community on both a local and a catchment scale.

The Greater Shepparton City Council developed a Stormwater Management Plan to improve the quality of urban stormwater discharged into local waterways. The Plan identifies actions to improve the environmental management of urban stormwater and protect the environmental values and beneficial uses of receiving environments. It identifies urban activities that may adversely affect water quality and sets in place strategies to protect water quality and beneficial uses from stormwater run-off.

The Plan addresses stormwater management in Shepparton, Mooroopna and Tatura.

Stormwater management projects

Kialla Lakes
Works have been completed on the Lowanna Waters wetland at Kialla Lakes to treat stormwater from the residential area.
Funding was provided by the Council and the Victorian Stormwater Action Program (VSAP).
Water Sensitive Urban Design features have also been incorporated into the drainage of residential subdivisions.

Gordon Drive Wetland Development
This wetland is now complete. This wetland treats stormwater from the nearby residential and industrial developments in Kialla prior to discharge into the Broken River.

Stormwater Outfalls Project
Four gross pollutant traps (GPTs) have been installed in Shepparton and Mooroopna to trap litter and sediment prior to it reaching the waterway. The GPT's are located adjacent to Gemmils Swamp, the Broken River at Colliver Road and Assim Drive and the Goulburn River at Vaughan Street. Two more GPT projects have been designed for Balaclava Road and Knight Street to commence when funding becomes available.

Lake Bartlett
Stage 1 works are completed at Lake Bartlett in Tatura.
The redevelopment works aim to improve both the aesthetic appeal of the area and
the quality of the water in the lake, as well as making the lake a more sustainable system.
Stage 2 and 3 will commence when funds become available.

Gemmills Swamps Wetland
A new wetland has been designed to treat Mooroopna's urban stormwater runoff. Construction will take place during 2010 and once the new plants are established will improve water quality entering Gemmils Swamp, an important local wildlife reserve managed by Parks Victoria, and the Goulburn River.
