Duplication of the Goulburn Valley Highway

The implementation of the projects identified to upgrade the Goulburn Valley Highway, in particular the duplication of the Arcadia section of the highway, the bypasses of Nagambie and Shepparton, and the Strathmerton deviation are strongly supported by the Greater Shepparton City Council.

The Goulburn Valley Highway is a crucial link in the transport chain between Melbourne and Brisbane, and is significantly important to the economies of the region.

Within Greater Shepparton, the Goulburn Valley Highway passes through the main central business district and drivers encounter extremely trying traffic conditions. There are eight sets of traffic lights as the highway goes through Shepparton, along with high levels of pedestrian traffic between High and Fryer Streets, and an intense mix of localised and highway traffic.

For Strathbogie residents, the Goulburn Valley Highway is a major presence within their municipality. It is literally the main street of Nagambie, and 6000 vehicles, including 2000 trucks pass through the street on a daily basis. The risk of fatality to residents and visitors from vehicles is proven, and unacceptably high.

The local government area of Moira has the two major interstate routes with both crossing over the Murray river.  One at Tocumwal being where the Goulburn Valley and Newell Highways join, and the other at Cobram/Barooga. As the Murray Valley and Goulburn Valley Highways are joined from west of Strathmerton to the junction of Benalla Tocumwal Road (at Yarroweyah Roadhouse) it could be considered that the majority of produce using these bridges use the Goulburn Valley Highway.

The complete duplication of the Goulburn Valley Highway would provide the Shire of Campaspe and its residents with reductions in travel times and increased safety for drivers. The duplication would also  improve the national and international competitiveness of Campaspe's larger industries.

Seymour, within the heart of Mitchell Shire, is strategically located on the junction of the major road routes in Victoria, taking passengers and freight traffic between Australia’s major markets of Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. The duplication of the Goulburn Valley Highway would increase the likelihood of investment and export potential in Mitchell Shire.

The benefits of the Goulburn Valley Highway project include:

National and State Objectives

The Goulburn Valley Highway has been identified as strategically important at both national and state levels.

Economic

Increased competitiveness for export goods and produce originating within Victoria and inland New South Wales as a result of reduced transport costs, including vehicle operating costs and travel time costs.

Direct on-road benefits to private and business road users resulting from reductions in transport costs.

Safety and Amenity

Reduced accidents and the associated economic and social costs. Improved safety and amenity in towns.

The Greater Shepparton City Council, along with our councils affected by the upgrade of the Goulburn Valley Highway, continues to fight for funding for the project.
