Kerbside Green Organics Collection
Green waste is the material we all generate in our kitchens and around our gardens and is comprised of such items as vegetable scraps, lawn clippings, small woody prunings and weeds. Your kerbside green organics bin is the bin with a lime green lid and dark green body and is collected on alternate fortnights to recycling, the same day as your domestic garbage bin.
About the green organics bins
- This service is for the collection of green organic waste from the garden and kitchen.
- This service is optional and is available for urban and small town residents only.
- The bin size is 120 or 240 litre.
- Green organics bins will be collected fortnightly on the alternate fortnight to your recycle bin.
What can I put in my green organics bin?
- Lawn clippings

- Loose branches (Trimmed to fit inside the green waste bin with the lid closed)

Tips on how to use your green organics collection service
Your green organics service is for the collection of lawn clippings, prunings, weeds, vegetable scraps and the like. In some circumstances your bin may become odorous. These conditions may arise when air is not able to flow through the contents of the bin, for example if the material is very wet and water accumulates in the bottom of the bin. Although the bins are vented, the air flow may not be sufficient to remove all moisture from the contents.
The following tips may assist householders to avoid these conditions:
- Try to cut lawns when the grass is dry at the end of the day.
- If possible schedule your garden maintenance close to your collection day. For example, if you cut your grass fortnightly, time it so that lawn clippings are only in your bin for a few days.
- Is it possible to stockpile your garden waste and load the bin just before collection day?
- Place woody type material in the base of the bin so that any accumulated moisture will not become odorous.
- Loosen the contents of the bin occassionally to aerate material and also to break up grass clippings that have become crusty. Wet grass clippings can form a crust that prevents contents leaving the bin during the collection process.
What happens to the green organic material after it has been collected?
Your green organic material is taken to Western Composting Technology were it is processed into a high grade compost soil conditioner known as GV Compost, available at local nurseries.
If your bin is exceeding 80 kilograms in weight it will NOT be collected. Please remove material prior to the next collection.
