Strategies and Policies

This section contains information on strategies and policies regarding waste collection and recycling.

ResourceSmart

ResourceSmart (formerly waste wise) has been developed by Sustainability Victoria as a single call to action for all Victorians to conserve energy, materials and water - at home, at work and out and about.  And to deliver the practical assistance needed to make the necessary changes in their lives to become ResourceSmart.

ResourceSmart is a major statewide integrated waste and litter education initiative that focuses on the prevention of waste and litter management. 

This plan incorporates the state ResourceSmart Programs and guidelines where applicable. The key elements of the Council’s program are:

• Minimising waste to landfill, collected from kerb-side services.
• Assisting and encouraging the development of a waste wise community.
• Encouraging the Council’s departments and service providers to minimise waste and consider buying recycled products where applicable.
• Promoting and encouraging property developers in waste minimisation and litter reduction.
• Reducing the illegal dumping of rubbish within the municipality.

Regional Strategies

The Goulburn Valley Regional Waste Management Group (Resource GV) develops and maintains a strategy for solid waste management which is currently under review.  A number of strategic priorities were determined including;

• Promote sharing of information and resources between member Councils, the Group and external bodies;
• Complement member Councils in their introduction of the principles of Best Value and best practice waste management;
• Further promotion and introduction of both State and locally developed litter and resource efficiency campaigns;

In conjunction with Resource GV and their Regional Education Officer, the Council is developing and implementing action plans to help achieve these goals.  This strategy encapsulates the Council's current commitments to the Resource GV strategic priorities. To find out more about Resource GV click the link below. 

Waste Management Strategy

This strategy provides a vision for the Council’s waste services for the next 10 years. It strengthens the Council’s commitment to minimising environmental impacts associated with its waste management activities, and also supports the provision of best practice waste services and facilities. The strategy is in accordance with the Council Plan 2004/2008 and Best Value principles.
