What a load of rubbish, down the drain!

When litter gets dropped in the street and washed into our drainage system, here's where it all end up; BEFORE it has a chance to pollute our beautiful river systems.

Council protects our rivers from this pollution through the use of gross pollutant traps in our storm water drainage system, which are cleaned regularly (kind of like your dish washer strainer).

The traps at Welsford Street were cleaned today with approximately 7.4 tonnes of waste, including plastic bottles removed.

Cranes are used to lift off the concrete lids and take out the 4 stainless steel baskets which are pressure washed.

Left over waste is cleaned out with a hand basket on a 6m pole.

Today Council staff cleaned out a number of sites with around 22 tonnes of waste removed.

Wouldn't it be great if it wasn't dropped in the first place?

Next time you see an empty bottle on the street, do the right thing and stick it in the recycling bin. It can be Clean Up Australia Day every day across Greater Shepparton.
