Greater Shepparton City Council is encouraging residents to say hello to their neighbours, on Neighbour Day, Sunday, 27 March 2011.
Greater Shepparton Deputy Mayor Michael Polan said Neighbour Day is an annual celebration of community."It is important we get out and meet our neighbours, as you never know when you may need their help, even if you just need to borrow a cup of sugar," Cr Polan said.
"Our lifestyles have become increasingly busy and we often don't know the people living around us.
"Organise a neighbourhood bbq, or invite your neighbour over for a cup of tea and a chat, it's easy!"
Neighbour Day was founded in 2003 around five basic principles
1. Strengthen communities and build better relationships with the people who live around us
2. Create safer, healthier and more vibrant suburbs and towns
3. Promote tolerance, respect and understanding
4. Break down community barriers
5. Protect the elderly, the vulnerable and the disadvantaged.
