The overall winners of City of Greater Shepparton Citizen of the Year, Joan Hanna and the City of Greater Shepparton Junior Citizen of the Year, Monika Mauger were announced at celebrations in Shepparton and Mooroopna.
Shepparton Australia Day Citizen of the Year and Overall Greater Shepparton Citizen of the Year Joan Hanna was presented with her certificates for the Shepparton Australia Day Citizen of the Year and the overall Greater Shepparton Australia Day Citizen of the Year at the Shepparton celebrations by Mayor Eric Bott. Ms Hanna has been an active contributor to the arts for over 50 years. She has been involved in the formation of numerous choirs and theatre groups. Ms Hanna is a volunteer for meals on wheels and visits those who are sick or housebound as a service for Wesley Church. Ms Hanna supervises student’s music examinations and has been a volunteer at the Australian National Piano Awards. Ms Hanna also provides child care services for low income mothers.
Mooroopna Australia Day Junior Citizen of the Year and Overall Greater Shepparton Junior Citizen of the Year Monika Mauger was presented with her certificates for the Mooroopna Australia Day Junior Citizen of the Year and the overall Greater Shepparton Australia Day Junior Citizen of the Year by Cr Jenny Houlihan at the Mooroopna celebrations. Ms Mauger will commence year 12 at Mooroopna Secondary College this year where she will be school captain. Ms Mauger has been the junior editor of the Mooroopna News Matters newspaper for two years. Ms Mauger was the recipient of the Victorian Premier’s Spirit of Anzac Price Tour, an overseas study tour to South East Asia to visit war sites of significance. Ms Mauger has also performed at Anzac Day ceremonies and Remembrance Day events in the community. She has been a member of the Mooroopna Secondary College netball team and the Mooroopna Cats Basketball Club.
LOCAL AWARD WINNERS
Shepparton Australia Day Junior Citizen of the Year Sam Brown has been a volunteer at numerous community events including Carols by Candlelight, Relay for Life, Jayco Herald Sun Tour and Australia Day events. Mr Brown has acted as musical director for GV Voice for two years and has coordinated musical acts at Relay for Life. Mr Brown supports other young artists in the area by providing training and promoting them to event organisers. Mr Brown has been a member of Word and Mouth and FreeZA Distortion Committee for a number of years. As a testament to Mr Brown’s community involvement, he featured on the front cover of the 2007 Telstra White Pages as a ‘Champion of our Community.’
Mooroopna Australia Day Citizen of the Year Maree Williams has been responsible for fundraising for a number of Mooroopna sporting clubs. Ms Williams has been team manager for Mooroopna junior school football teams and the Mooroopna Cats Basketball teams. Ms Williams has been responsible for organising driving lessons for Turkish women in the area. Ms Williams is currently Treasurer of the Mooroopna Community Centre.
Tatura Australia Day Citizen of the Year Jill Clapperton is a member of the Tatura Business and Professional Womens club. Ms Clapperton is also Chair of the education scholarship committee. Ms Clapperton is Secretary of the Safety House Program in Tatura and has been involved in teaching English to migrants. Ms Clapperton is a member of the Mactier Park redevelopment consultative committee and is active in Cussen Park tree planting days.
Tatura Young Citizen of the Year Sally McCartney has participated in the Kids Helpline Peer Skills Program. Ms McCartney has received a number of awards including the Telstra Aussie of the Month and the Terrific Kids award. Ms McCartney has received various academic awards from Mooroopna Secondary College and has played netball for the past eight years. Ms McCartney has exhibited cattle at International Dairy Week and in the youth show for the past three years.
ArcadiaAustralia Day Citizen of the Year Bernard Kennedy is the President of the Arcadia and District Progress Society. Mr Kennedy has been an active member of the Arcadia Fire Brigade for the past 45 years. Mr Kennedy is a past president of Shepparton pony club and the Arcadia tennis club, Mr Kennedy is a lifetime resident of Arcadia.
ArcadiaAustralia Day Junior Citizen of the Year Samantha Cordy is a member of the Shepparton High School girls cricket team and the Shepparton High School Netball club, who were runners up in the 2007 competition. Miss Cordy received distinction certificates for academic excellence during her first year at high school. Miss Cordy is a responsible and well mannered member of the Arcadia community who has no hesitation in assisting others.
Murchison Citizen of the Year Mary Deane is a retired Pharmacist who has been active in the Murchison community for many years. Ms Deane has been involved in fundraising for the new community centre and the Murchison Bush Nursing Hospital. Ms Deane plays the church organ every Sunday and also plays at weddings and funerals. Ms Deane organises and performs at sing-alongs twice a month at the nursing home in Murchison
Toolamba Citizen of the Year Stuart Rea has been a member of the Country Fire Authority for 20 years. Mr Rea contributes his time to the Toolamba cemetery trust and the Toolamba Primary School. Mr Rea was on the steering committee of the Irwin Memorial Garden. Mr Rea is a member of the Toolamba Tennis Club and the fishing club.
He is a lifelong resident of Toolamba.
