Community groups, organisations and individuals are being encouraged to share their ideas for the future of Shepparton and Mooroopna’s rivers and floodplain.

RiverConnect is developing a master plan for the Goulburn and Broken Rivers and the Red Gum floodplain at the heart of the urban centres.

The RiverConnect project aims to strengthen the connection between the Greater Shepparton community and the Goulburn and Broken rivers.

Greater Shepparton City Council's RiverConnect Project Officer, Renee Warren, said RiverConnect was seeking input into the development of the master plan, as it is important the plan reflects the community's views on a wide range of matters, such as indigenous and cultural issues, tourism, the environment, education and recreation.

"The master plan will provide a blueprint to improve the condition, access and appreciation of the river environment and detail opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy the natural surrounds,'' Ms Warren said.

"This plan should reflect the historical, environmental, social and economic significance of the rivers and forest that are the heart and soul of our communities.

"I encourage anyone that has an interest in our rivers to come along to one of the community forums, complete the online survey or contact the Council to have your say."

Community members can gain more information and provide feedback online on Greater Shepparton City Council's website www.greatershepparton.com.au/riverconnect by Friday 4 December 2009.

They can also attend one of two community forums to be held on Wednesday 4 November from 5.30pm to 6.30pm, or Monday 9 November from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

Both forums will be held at the Greater Shepparton Council offices, upstairs in the Boardroom, 90 Welsford Street, Shepparton.

Anyone is welcome to attend but they should call Council's RiverConnect Project Officer Renee Warren on (03) 5832 9714 to register.

Ms Warren said the consultation was occurring as part of phase one of the development of the master plan. Further consultation would occur before the plan was finalised in the new year.

RiverConnect is a joint Greater Shepparton City Council and Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority project in partnership with: Department of Sustainability & Environment, Department of Primary Industries, Word & Mouth, Yorta Yorta Joint Body, Yorta Yorta Nations, Rumbalara Co-operative, Goulburn Murray Landcare Network, Department of Education and Early Childhood Development Shepparton Network, Parks Victoria and the Sir Andrew & Lady Fairley Foundation.
