Greater Shepparton City Council has secured 12 cadetships through the release of a second round of the Rural Skills Cadetship Program.
The program, which is funded by Regional Development Victoria, encourages young people to return to regional areas to complete work placement in an industry that is closely linked to their field of study.Council's Business Development Coordinator Leanne Mulcahy said a similar number of students from Greater Shepparton were successful in securing cadetships through the initial funding round.
"We welcome this announcement as programs such as these play an important role in helping to address skills shortages in the region," Ms Mulcahy said.
"Students who secure these cadetships are more likely to maintain their links to the regional area which increases the probability that they will return when they have completed their degree.
"Examples of industries which have secured cadetships include engineering, food science and health.
"It is crucial that regional towns have the ability to attract skilled workers to the region in order to maintain a viable workforce.
"The program also gives young people valuable work experience."
Participating students receive up to $2,500 and the employer is paid up to $1,250 upon completion of the 12 month employment period.
