Greater Shepparton City Council is requesting businesses and community organisations who may be interested in being a part of the Greater Shepparton Seniors Festival in October 2010 to contact Council.
The 2010 Victorian Seniors Festival is officially held from Sunday 3 October to Sunday 10 October and Council is interested to hear from any groups wishing to host an event throughout the month of October.
Greater Shepparton Councillor Michael Polan said last year the Greater Shepparton festival was held over two weeks and due to the success and popularity, the Council was planning extend this year's festival over the whole month of October.
"It's just a great concept and the Council is pleased to be hosting a bigger and better festival in 2010. We hope other businesses and organisations see the benefits and get onboard too," Cr Polan said.
"Council has a small amount of funding available to assist community based organisations or groups to hold events during the festival, so people are encouraged to get in touch with Council as soon as possible."
Council's Manager Aged and Children's Services, Simon Rose said the festival enhances seniors' social interaction by creating opportunities to meet new people, make new friends and build on current friendships.
"It also gives seniors the opportunity to try a range of new activities like attending concerts and outings," Mr Rose said.
"Research shows the more socially connected we are as a community, the healthier we are and the safer we are, that is why celebrations like this are so important."
Events will be promoted through the Greater Shepparton Seniors Festival Program of Events, which will be distributed throughout the community.
Interested businesses and community organisations are encouraged to call Council's Seniors Festival Coordinator Kristie Welch on (03) 5832 9783. An application form to host an event will then be posted out.
The 2009 Greater Shepparton Seniors Festival ran for two weeks and had more than 2000 people attend 23 events in the program. Victoria's 79 local councils hosted more than 500 free and low cost events across the state in 2009.
