Pet registrations due

News article released on Tuesday 23 March 2010

All pet owners must renew their cat and dog registrations by Saturday 10 April to avoid being fined.

Animal registration renewal forms have recently been mailed out to all pet owners in the municipality.

Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Sustainability and Environment Greg McKenzie said it is a requirement that all domestic cats and dogs aged over three months be registered.

"It is also a requirement that all cats be desexed prior to being registered with the Council," Mr McKenzie said.

"All pets being registered for the first time within Greater Shepparton need to be microchipped, which will make it easier for the animal to be returned to you if it goes missing.

"Community rangers will conduct random door knocks after 10 April to identify any unregistered pets.

"Owners will be fined if they are found to have unregistered animals at their property."

Some discounts are available for pet registrations, including if the animal is desexed, microchipped or over 10 years of age.

Under Council's Local Law No 1 it is an offence to own more than two dogs and two cats at a residential property without a permit.

Animal registration forms can be obtained from from the Customer Service counter at the Council office, 90 Welsford Street, Shepparton.
