Sporting grants available for Greater Shepparton

News article released on Tuesday 14 August 2012

Applications to Round One of Greater Shepparton City Council’s Our Sporting Future Funding Program will close at the end of this month.

The Our Sporting Future Funding Program was established to assist community groups to develop small to medium sized programs for new and developing sporting organisations throughout Greater Shepparton.

Applications for this round of funding will close on Friday 31 August.

Organisations can apply for two sorts of funding - either a matching grant of up to $15,000, where the organisation will provide matching funds, or up to $5,000 without the matching funds requirement.

Merrigum Bowls Club is a past recipient of funding under the program and was able to erect an external shelter for its members with the funding.

"The whole process was extremely user-friendly," said Robyn Balfour, Secretary of Merrigum Bowls Club. "We didn't have anywhere shady to go. We are mainly volunteers, so this funding, and also support from the Lions Club for outdoor furniture, meant the project could happen."

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Michael Polan says that the Our Sporting Future Funding Program is a great way of supporting an important part of community life in the Municipality.

"Greater Shepparton has a long and healthy sporting history," Cr Polan said. "Council is delighted to have an opportunity like this to provide grants to grass roots sporting organisations. They are well placed to identify what their priorities are, and we are pleased to be able to give them a helping hand to make them happen.

"Most of the organisations are volunteer-driven, and I commend the hard work that is put into producing the applications and the projects."

For information about how to apply for funding, please contact Council's Recreation and Parks Branch on (03) 5832 9776 or visit www.greatershepparton.com.au,  where you can also download the guidelines for the funding program.
