Regional approach to economic development

Former Commissioner of Victoria Police, Christine Nixon, addressed more than 50 representatives from the Hume Economic Development Network at a conference in Shepparton last week.

Now serving as Chair of the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority, Ms Nixon provided an update of the relief effort for communities affected by the February bushfires.

Hume Economic Development Network Chair Michelle Moore said this was an excellent opportunity for those involved with economic development across the region to collaborate in a united approach to strengthen the region's economy.

"The Network comprises the 12 local government authorities within the Hume region as well as other key organisations such as Regional Development Victoria and the Industry Capability Network," said Ms Moore.

"A strong line up of keynote speakers included Chief Executive Officer of Regional Development Victoria, Justin Hanney and Director of the Flinders Institute for Housing, Urban and Regional Research Professor Andrew Beer.

"Professor Beer discussed a range of strategies and approaches that regional bodies can use to strengthen their economies, especially during times of economic crisis.

"The Hume Economic Development Network has developed a regional response to the Global Economic Crisis and has been invited to present at the Economic Development Australia conference later this year.

"The network is focussing on developing more opportunities to work together to increase economic benefits across the region and this is fast becoming recognised at a national level," said Ms Moore.

The municipalities in the Hume region are: Mitchell, Campaspe, Moira, Indigo, Alpine, Wangaratta, Wodonga, Benalla, Murrindindi, Strathbogie and Greater Shepparton.
