2009 Indigenous Ceramic Art Award
21 February to 19 April
The Indigenous Ceramic Art Award is a biennial ceramic art competition open to Australian artists of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander descent. The exhibition attracts artists from across Australia and presents an exciting survey of current Indigenous ceramic art practice. Offering $33,000 in prize monies it is the only award of its kind. In 2009 the exhibition will be selected and judged by celebrated contemporary Indigenous artist, Dr Julie Gough.
Shortlisted artists: Rebecca Atkinson (Moitheriban/Bangerang), Vera Cooper (Yorta Yorta), Deanne Deutscher (Wathaurong), Janet Fieldhouse (Torres Strait), Irwin Lewis (Yamatji), Danie Mellor ( Mamu/Ngagen), Jennifer Mullett (Kurnai/Monaro), Adam Ridgeway (Worimi), Rona Rubuntja (Aranda).
The ICAA is presented under the patronage of Dr Gloria Thanakupi Fletcher and with the generous support of Sir Andrew and Lady Fairley Foundation, Margaret Lawrence Bequest, FRRR/Sarah and Baillieu Myer Foundation, and S&J Rothfield Family Fund.
Survey of Indigenous Ceramic Art from the Shepparton Art Gallery Collection

The study and appreciation of Indigenous Ceramic Art is a growing area. The foundation of ceramics in earth, water and fire, together with the tactile nature of this art form, continues to attract some of the most significant Aboriginal artists of our time. This exhibition showcases a selection of work from the Shepparton Art Gallery collection to highlight the development of this art form over the past thirty years, including a representation of Thanakupi from the 1970s to today
