Cultural Diversity Week

Cultural Diversity Week occurs in March each year to celebrate the cultural diversity which makes up our country and local communities.

In 2012 Cultural Diversity Week was celebrated from 19-25 March, with Harmony Day falling on Wednesday 21 March.

A variety of events occurred throughout Greater Shepparton to celebrate our rich cultural diversity including:

Sports Without Borders Sports Day

On Tuesday 20 March Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) students were invited to participate in a sports day to experience new sports and learn how to join local sporting clubs. Developed between Sports Without Borders and Greater Shepparton City Council, the program was also funded by the Department of Planning and Community Development.

Students from Isik College, McGuire Secondary College and Shepparton English Language Centre were able to experience sports as soccer, cycling and other group activities including egg and spoon races.

Prior to the event, a leadership program was undertaken with ten students which allowed them to develop their skills through assisting in the organisation of the day.

The day was well attended and students thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Kidstown Family Picnic

On Harmony Day, Wednesday 21 March, a family morning tea was held at SPC Ardmona Kidstown.

Over 200 people of all ages attended the event and enjoyed a range of children's activities, dancing, singing and food.

This is an annual event which is made possible through the partnership of many local organisations.

Council lunch

On Thursday 22 March, Council staff were involved in hosting a multicultural lunch for their work colleagues.

Eight departments adopted a country during their lunch break, including Afghanistan, China, India, Italy, Morocco, Spain, Thailand and Turkey.

Staff thoroughly enjoyed travelling the world and experiencing the food and culture of a range of countries and are keen to make the event even larger in following years.
