Anti Poverty Week
Council's Mayor and Staff promote the call for fresh food donations

Greater Shepparton City Council has developed a health prevention initiative to encourage Council staff, families and community members to reflect on ‘Anti Poverty Week’ and consider what we can do to help those around us that may be experiencing hardship. Last year we promoted anti-poverty from Friday, 16 October to Saturday, 22 October 2011.
Anti Poverty Week aims to:
- Strengthen public understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty and hardship around the world, in Australia and for us in Greater Shepparton
- Encourage research, discussion and action to address anti poverty; including action by individuals, communities, organisations and governments.
Food insecurity rates in the past twelve months up to March 2011 in Greater Shepparton were at 8.1 %, higher than the State average for Victoria of 5.6% according to Deptartment of Health's records and reported in our Goulburn Valley Community Profile. (Released March 2011, Goulburn Valley Primary Care Partnership). This reflects that over 8 per cent of our own population area have found it difficult to feed themselves at least once during teh twelve month period.
The following factors or a combination of them may contribute to food insecurity:
- low income
- unemployment
- non-english speaking background
- homelessness
- stress
- mental illness
- lack of transport access or availability
- disability
- social connection
- refugee or new immigrant challenges
- unable to purchase or identify regular familiar foods or substitutes
- difficulty cooking or preparing food.
