Greater Shepparton residents are encouraged to get to know their neighbours during Social Inclusion Week, which is an annual program, held in the last week of November each year. The aim of the week was to connect local communities, strengthen relationships and support those experiencing loneliness and isolation.
The theme of 2011's Social Inclusion Week (SIW) was 'Collaborate, Connect and Celebrate' with a particular focus on intergenerational connections. Council Staff encouraged neighbours to get together. A street party brings everybody together, providing support to those around us and addresses the inequality sometimes felt when people live alone or isolated from families. Neighbourhood gatherings encourage the intergenerational conversation and connections which allow people to help, ask and learn from each other in a relaxed environment.
Council has provided invitations that can be easily printed and shared to promote social connection and engagement. Consider researching about SIW before next year to plan your own event.
Social Inclusion Week was originally the brainchild of Dr Jonathon Welch best known for founding The Choir of Hope and Inspiration - formerly known as 'The Choir of Hard Knocks'. His achievements include an order of Australia medal (8 June 2009) for his work as founding Music Director of the ‘Choir of Hope and Inspiration' and his tireless work in bringing hope and inspiration to homeless and disadvantaged Australians, he was also honoured for his contribution to the music industry as a highly regarded opera singer and vocal coach.
