Community Youth Development

Greater Shepparton City Council values the importance of young people and the significant contribution that they make to our community.

Young people are vibrant, passionate, innovative and enthusiastic about the communities in which they live. It is the responsibility of the community to support young people and provide them with every opportunity to succeed. Young people are not just our future they are also important in the present!

According to the 2006 Australia Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Census, 17.9% (10021) of our population in Greater Shepparton were young people between the ages of 12 and 25 years

Council are currently in the process of developing a Greater Shepparton Youth Strategy and Action Plan that will inform the role of Council within the youth space. Throughout 2011 Council has been conducting consultations with young people, local youth service organisations, agencies and education settings that will inform the development of the strategy. It is anticipated that the draft Youth Strategy and Action Plan will be available by April 2012.

Greater Shepparton City Council is committed to working in partnership with youth service providers and young people to develop a thriving service coordination that will represent the needs of young people in our community. This systematic approach will ensure that Council and the local youth sector is working towards shared goals to meet the needs of young people as well as being able to collectively and strategically respond to youth sector issues. This approach will ultimately improve outcomes for young people and will also have benefits for the wider community as a whole.

Council values the contribution that young people make to our community. Council will continue to look at ways to promote youth engagement across the region and facilitate opportunities for young people to have input into planning and decision making regarding issues that are relevant and important to young people.
