Greater Shepparton City Council established the Disability Advisory Committee in November 2008 and provides an officer to support the group.
The aim of the committee is to address community- wide issues in order to represent and service the entire community.
It gives members of the community a place to raise access and inclusion concerns relating to all people.
Greater Shepparton has an estimated population of around 10,000 people with some form of disability that reduces their ability to access their community and be included in everyday activities that many take for granted. This includes not just people with physical disabilities but also those with intellectual disabilities and mental illness. This committee gives these people a voice to share their opinions and ideas or to lobby to seek improvements in their area.
The committee advises Council on a number of different items including access to Council services and properties.
The Committee is made up of members who have a disability, carers, representatives of disability support organisations and a Councillor Representative. The members are: David Harcoan,Tony Bell, Bryan Oehm, Camuran Albanoi, Noela Hill, Barry Kruse, Leah Ross, Ron Harrison, Sharon Sellick and Fern Summer. In addition to the elected members, the committee is supported by a senior Council staff member, Access and Inclusion Officer and the Rural Access Project Officer.
