The aim of the Story a Day program is to build a partnership for learning between kindergarten and home and increase children’s exposure of literacy resources in the home environment.
The program involves establishing a library at the kindergarten where children can borrow books on a regular basis to take home and read with their family. Once the child has reached a particular milestone, for example read 12 books, they receive a book to take home and keep, enriching the home learning environment.
Through Story a Day it is anticipated that reading will become a normal part of a child’s day and a love of books will be fostered amongst the family unit. The program also has several long term applications including improved literacy skills for the child and other family members, improved language development and improved transition to primary school.
After a successful pilot in 2005, the program now operates in every Greater Shepparton City Council kindergarten and a number of community based kinders. At a local level, feedback from parents indicates a positive change with their child’s reading behaviour and interest in books, noticeable improvements with speech and introducing reading as part of the daily routine at home. At a statewide level, Story a Day was short listed for an award as part of the statewide Early Years Awards in 2007.
The Community Literacy Workgroup, through the Best Start Municipal Early Years Plan, hopes to expand the implementation of the program to every kindergarten across the municipality over the next 3 to 5 years.
