Shepparton Art Museum presents "The Golden Age of Colour Prints: Ukiyo-e from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston"

The Golden Age of Colour Prints: Ukiyo-e is drawn from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, one of the most significant collections of Japanese prints in the world.

Focusing on what is known as the golden age of nishiki-e colour prints, the Tenmei and Kansei eras (1781-1801), it showcases 100 ukiyo-e prints and offers a rare opportunity for visitors to appreciate the gorgeous colour aesthetic that is the essence of nishiki-e, or ukiyo-e printed in multiple colours.

The exhibition focuses on the art of three master printmakers who were key innovators in the medium: Torii Kiyonaga, Kitagawa Utamaro and Toshusai Sharaku. At the time they were produced, the images were considered to be crude and unsophisticated, and for popular consumption. The superficial world of beauty and entertainment, of the pleasure quarter and the theatre were considered to be both remote from everyday life and not appropriate subjects for art. However the art form rose to great popularity in the metropolitan culture of Tokyo during the second half of the 17th century and has had a powerful and enduring influence on Western art.

'Frankenstein' by Nick Dear

Thrilling, moving, scary and beautiful – a man born as an adult has to survive on his wits, learning fast.

This is a rollercoaster ride of a story, fast, furious, haunting and entertaining… a Frankenstein with a mission. Mary Shelly’s classic tale is re-imagined in a spine-tingling new version by Nick Dear – not for the faint hearted.

Frankenstein is an astonishing adaptation and it was a huge hit for the National Theatre in 2011. The play gives the Creature a voice – this is a Creature that talks, that can be articulate about the way he feels – and the way he feels is very angry. We’ve got some exciting young talent on stage in this piece – it’s going to be something very scary indeed.

A troupe of actors arrive to put on a play of Frankenstein. These actors dance, juggle, act, tumble. They set the bare stage: a scenic design capturing the gothic darkness of Mary Shelley’s novel; flaming torches light the back walls; actors exit and enter the acting circle, while other actors watch their scenes; make up is applied; blood, dirt; a cello player, half human, half creature plays stirring music; the creature comes to life in a burst of light and steam; the images of anatomy flash on back walls; heartbeats pound in the darkness… another flash of light … the creature tries to speak! And the play begins…

Fast, furious, dynamic, dark, funny, cheeky, scary, compelling… Frankenstein.

Audience Advice: Production contains semi-nudity, a sexual scene and smoke effects.

David Smorgon, a lawyer by profession, is a well-known, successful and respected businessman who has a reputation as a force in the business and sporting worlds.
For 25 years David Smorgon was a senior executive at Smorgon Consolidated Industries, the $1 billion family business that spanned meat, paper, glass, plastics and steel industries. When the business was sold off in 1995 in a staged divestment it ended a 70-year family history and marked one of the lowest points of David's life. He and others were bitterly disappointed when their efforts to save the family business failed.

Shortly afterwards, David - a lifetime supporter of the Footscray Football Club (now the Western Bulldogs) - was invited to head the taskforce that reviewed the club. Newly fired up by the many challenges the club was facing, David became president. Under his leadership, where business perspective and professionalism are paramount, the club has experienced great success on and off the field. David will end his 16-year reign as president in December 2012. He will be the second-longest serving president in the AFL.

In 1996 David and his three sons established Generation Investments focusing on business opportunities, equity and property investments. His most recent business venture is PointMade, where he assists senior executives to professionalise their pitch and speaking skills. Drawing on his own business acumen and astuteness, he enjoys imparting his own rules for success to inspire others.

In 1997 David was named the inaugural chairman of Family Business Australia, established to provide guidance to family businesses nationally. Eminently qualified with his insight into family businesses, he held this position for six years.

In 2000, David Smorgon was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to the Western Bulldogs and for his contribution to the community through health, social welfare and education.

In 2008, David accepted the role of Ambassador for' Ochre - Supporting Indigenous health through art', an auction of spectacular Indigenous art to raise funds for research into Indigenous child health at Charles Darwin University's Menzies School of Health Research.

David Smorgon is a fascinating presenter who knows the requirements for success and generously imparts his wisdom born of experience. Refreshingly honest, there is arguably no one better equipped to talk about business, success, adversity, teamwork and resilience.

These charismatic singers have been performing their unique blend of easy listening and folk music and their popularity is proven with their record sales. Between them they have sold 18 million records, making them one of Ireland's biggest entertainment exports, in the same league as U2, Enya, Boyzone and The Corrs.

Mr Damage presents The Angels - "Greatest Hits"

The Angels announce a tour to showcase their latest album "Taking it to the Streets" along with some of their greatest hits.

What do we do now?

That was the hard question Rick and John Brewster of The Angels had been chewing over in early 2011. Their singer Doc Neeson had set off to pursue a solo career a few months earlier. Along with bassist Chris Bailey, Rick and John Brewster decided they had to find a new singer. They’d been itching to record a new The Angels album for years, they had songs and they had the hunger, and in April 2011 they found their new singer.

Dave Gleeson, who had spent two decades fronting The Screaming Jets, made a last minute decision to go and catch a show by Rick and John Brewster at a pub in Adelaide. The Screaming Jets had opened for The Angels on a national tour back in 1991, but it’d been years since they’d crossed paths. At the pub, Dave Gleeson had edged his way to the stage until John Brewster spotted him and invited him to jump up and sing a few Angels classics. He didn’t need to be asked twice.

“John and I looked at each other,” says Rick Brewster, “and we knew when we heard Dave’s voice on Marseilles and I Ain’t The One....We just knew right there, that night, it could work.”

A few weeks later, Dave Gleeson found himself walking into Sydney’s legendary Alberts Studios at noon to record new songs with The Angels, the band that had soundtracked his teenage years and inspired him to take up rock n roll as a career.

Less than half an hour later, Rick, John, Chris Bailey, Dave Gleeson and recently recruited drummer Nick Norton, were listening back to the first new song from The Angels in more than a decade. A cheer went up in the studio, smiles all round. It worked.

“We knew right then, we had a band,” says John Brewster, who founded The Angels with Rick and Doc in 1974, and produced the new album with Rick. “We knew it could work onstage with Dave, but it had to work in the studio. Dave sang this new song (Waiting For The Sun) three times, bam, bam, bam, we used the second take.”

By the end of the day, they’d finished another song. The next day, The Angels recorded two more. By the third day, they had a new EP and two shows were booked to debut this new lineup of The Angels. Would people come? They got their answer when they walked onstage at Sydney’s Annandale Hotel to find the infamous rock room crammed solid, from the front row to the back wall. There were no intros. They stormed into the first song and didn’t pull back for two hours.

From August through to December, 2011, while taking the Waiting For The Sun tour around Australia, The Angels returned to Alberts Studios 3 times and, over 9 days in total, recorded 14 songs. There was no record deal in place, they were starting again, grabbing studio time when it was available, or when they could afford it, and not wasting a moment when they were there.

“We felt like we had a real opportunity to show what we could do,” says Chris Bailey. “It was an open canvas. There were no expectations. We didn’t have to deliver for anybody but ourselves. We all wanted to be there, we all wanted to play, we all wanted to make a new Angels album. A great album. And that’s what we did.”

The new album kicks off with To The Streets, a jangling, bracing burst of acoustic and electric guitars, a splash of tambourine and soaring, melodic organ.

This is The Angels?

Yes, this is The Angels.

And Take It To The Streets is their new album.

“This is a dream come true for me,” says Dave Gleeson, “it doesn’t get much better than to record an album with The Angels. And it’s the right time to make a rock record like this. There’s too much machine music out there, and rock got too soft. This album is what rock is all about.”

“The guitar muscle mustered by the Brewster Brothers, through Marshall stacks, has a sonic impact akin to that of Australia’s most famous riff-meisters, Angus and Malcolm Young. With Dave Gleeson out front, the re-booted Angels tear through a catalogue that includes such seminal songs as ‘Take A Long line’, ‘Marseilles’ and a jaw-dropping ‘Face The Day’. Back with a vengeance and a new album, Take It To The Streets, the Angels, who had the bulk of the 10 000 strong audience on their feet, are showing no signs of slowing down."
The past year has been a whirlwind for Kate as she undertook two national tours, dates in Asia and Europe, a handful of festivals including Splendour In The Grass, Woodford Folk Festival and Pyramid Rock, a headline tour across the US, as well as a return visit to support the newly re-formed Ben Folds Five in stadiums throughout the country. Kate also performed a principle role in “The Death of Klinghoffer” with the English National Opera in their 2012 London season. In 2013 she will be singing again with the English National Opera in the world premier of “Sunken Garden”, a sci-fi opera written by Michel Van der Aa and David Mitchell (bestselling author of 'Cloud Atlas'), in which Kate will be appearing on stage via 3D projection.

And now, for the first time since the release of ‘Nightlfight’, Kate is heading out on the road for an extensive tour of regional centres around Australia. Playing in intimate theatres and venues, Kate will be performing as a duo with her long-time collaborator Keir Nuttall on guitar.

Kate says, “Of course I love playing in the capital cities, but there is something very special about the audiences in regional areas. It has been more than three years since my last big regional tour, so this one is long overdue. These fans are hugely important to me, and I can't wait to see them!”

Supporting all shows on the tour will be Franky Walnut, a well-scrubbed country boy who has been enthralling audiences both locally and at home with his extensive back catalogue of between 6 and 7 songs, most of which he can remember the lyrics to without prompting. His material tackles weighty issues such as Australian identity and ringworm. He was a finalist in the first round heats of the Clintonvale State School talent quest and pie drive in 1987, after which he managed to kiss Shelley Nolan on the oval.

Don’t miss the opportunity to experience an up close and personal night with Kate Miller-Heidke as she tours Australia throughout May and June.

The Fairies present 'I Want to be A Princess'

Doesn’t every little girl want to be a Princess? Rhapsody is a beautiful fairy but she has a dream. She wants to be a Princess!

All of her fairyland friends want to help make their fairy friend happy. Wizzy conjures up some crazy spells; Elf teaches some very Princessey dances; Barnaby gathers sweet nectar to make the perfect Princess Potion while her best friend, Harmony, brings all of the helpful ideas together.

But just when it seems like dreams do come true, Rhapsody realises the not-so-good things about being a Princess. Just what will this pretty pink fairy decide to do in the end?

A gorgeous production from The Fairies combining so many favourite things into one hour-long show!

Singing, dancing, magic, friendship and, of course, Princesses!

'It's My Party (And I'll Die If I Want To)' by Elizabeth Coleman

Gruff, well ordered, quintessentially Aussie family man Ron is convinced he is dying. In a magnanimous gesture of loving finality, he hosts a party, giving his wife and children the chance to spend a few last quality moments as a family.

The gathering brings about some urgent confessions, a surprise ‘wedding’, and a visit from the undertaker. As the minutes tick away, Ron’s party schedule unravels to reveal a dysfunctional family unit that is both outlandishly bizarre and utterly recognisable.

From the writer that brought you the highly successful comedy Secret Bridesmaids’ Business, Elizabeth Coleman’s deliciously funny and sweetly dark play It’s My Party (And I’ll Die If I Want To) is a tale of anxiety, absurdity and occasionally terror.

Like all great comedies, there is laughter... but the elbow jabbing at your ribs is that little bit sharper than expected.

Audience advice: Production contains strong language and adult themes

'Tune in Tomorrow'

'Tune in Tomorrow' is a wonderfully funny recollection of the songs, commercial, stories and radio serials of the 1940s and 50s.

Before television the mass medium of entertainment was the radio. Tune in Tomorrow recalls the highlights of entertainment in the era before the Melbourne Olympics and Rock’n Roll.

The show includes extracts from the beloved serials Dad and Dave, When a girl Marries, the perennial Superman, Blue Hills, the unique Piddingtons mind reading act and Australia’s Amateur Hour.

They are brought together with the songs and commercials of the period..

Leading a multi talented cast is the wonderfully entertaining Anne Phelan currently featured in Winners and Losers on the Seven Network, versatile Francis Greenslade of Mad as Hell on ABC-TV and Winners and Losers, and brilliant young music theatre performer Joel Parnis.

'I Heart Bunnings' featuring Harley Breen

It’s 8am, Sunday morning. Q. What’s wrong? A. You’re not at Bunnings.

It’s the ultimate man-shed. Two acres of timber, tools and trellises, guaranteed to make your man-ovaries ache. It’s a fantasy supermarket where dreams and wobbly bookshelves are made.

Harley Breen has two brothers, they're both carpenters. He likes going to Bunnings to look at things he could make if they were around to fix them.

Perhaps this is Bunnings’ great, dark secret: no one there knows what the hell they’re doing! It is the perfect place to wander around and feel like you’ve got the skills and materials to nail your stuff together.

I Heart Bunnings is a show built for anyone renovating a life.
