Survey shows positive outlook for businesses

Media Release: Tuesday 6 May 2008

A survey recently conducted by Greater Shepparton City Council shows business owners in the municipality are positive about the future of their business.

The Business Expansion and Retention Program survey was conducted throughout February and aimed to formulate an up-to-date profile of the local economy.

Council's Business Development Officer Alicia Keogh said it also looked to identify strengths and potential growth areas for local businesses, assist local business with solving problems and exploring new opportunities and create employment opportunities in the region.

"We are delighted with the response, with over 250 businesses completing the survey," Ms Keogh said.

"The results reveal Greater Shepparton businesses are positive about the future, with 58 per cent of respondents indicating their business will increase in the next year and 81 per cent indicating they will employee the same number or more employees in the next year.

"One of the fantastic aspects of the results is that over 74 per cent of businesses said they were involved in the local community through sponsorship or support of local groups and organisations.

"Over a third of respondents requested more information on training programs and advice on a range of topics and we have been able to provide brochures and information to these businesses.

"There is also great news for our Skilled Migration Program, with 46 per cent of businesses indicating they would consider employing a skilled migrant. With the region experiencing skills shortages in a number of industries, it is heartening to know that businesses are open to options that will address these.

"Businesses should also recognise that if they are having trouble filling a position, would like information on training for them or their staff or are looking to expand, they can contact the Economic Development Department at any time.

"The survey will be conducted again in two years to determine trends and give businesses the chance to request assistance or information."

The full results will be published in the next Greater Shepparton Greater Business newsletter and will also be available on the Council's website www.greatershepparton.com.au/business/businessnews
