The Greater Shepparton Community Literacy workgroup is pleased to announce the winners of the inaugural Grade 5 and 6 story writing competition, writer Jordan Clothier-Harris and illustrator Drew Loveridge from Bourchier St Primary School.
Their winning story, The Lonely Lion was one of 21 entries received from eight primary schools. A three person judging panel, led by Anne Tomietto, GV Regional Library Operations Manager, had the difficult task of deciding a winner from the fantastic entries.
“The entries received were of a very high standard and we as judges, found it very difficult to choose a winner,” Ms Tomietto said.
“Reading is such an important and enjoyable activity and we hope to encourage a love of books and reading amongst children and their family.”
Greater Shepparton Mayor Jenny Houlihan presented the winning students with a certificate and a professionally printed copy of their story, which will now be included in the 3.5 year book bag for 12 months, and a copy sent to every primary school in Greater Shepparton. The school also received a $100 book voucher.
“The response received to this competition was excellent and I congratulate everyone who took the time to write and illustrate their own book,” Cr Houlihan said.
The competition was open to all Grade 5 and 6 students attending a primary school in Greater Shepparton. Students were invited to write and illustrate an original story to be considered as part of the Greater Shepparton Book Bag Program.
The program provides book bags to children attending their 4 week, 8 month, 18 month and 3.5 year Maternal and Child Health check-up.
